European acclaim for grade 9 experiment
17. maj 2013 13.17 EnglishTake 400 cress seeds and divide them into 12 trays. Then place the trays in two rooms at the same temperature, six in each room. Give the trays the same amount of water and sunlight over 12 days, but expose six of the trays to mobile phone radiation.
This is the recipe for a biology experiment so ingenious that it has attracted international attention from leading biologists and radiation experts. The experiment is the brainchild of five girls from class 9.b at Hjallerup School in North Jutland, and it all started when the girls were finding it difficult to concentrate in their lessons.
“We all thought we experienced concentration problems in school if we slept with our mobile phones at the bedside, and sometimes we also found it difficult sleeping,” explained Lea Nielsen, one of the five budding researchers.
The experiment
The school did not have the equipment to test the effect of mobile phone radiation on the girls themselves, which, as it turned out, was probably a good thing. Consequently, the girls had to find an alternative, and the solution they came up with was cress seeds.
Six trays of seeds were placed in a room with no radiation, while six were placed in another room alongside two routers emitting roughly the same type of radiation as an ordinary mobile phone.

Then the girls just had to wait 12 days, observe, measure, weigh and take photos. The results spoke for themselves: the cress seeds alongside the routers did not grow at all, and some even mutated or died.
“It’s really frightening that there was such a big effect, and we were really struck by the results,” said Nielsen.

The reactions
The experiment secured the girls a place in the final of the “Young Researchers” competition, but that was only the beginning. So far, leading researchers from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Sweden have shown great interest in the girls’ project.

Professor Olle Johanson of Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm is among those to have been impressed. Johanson considers the experiment to be ingenious and now wants to repeat it with a Belgian research colleague, Professor Marie-Claire Cammaert of the Université libre de Bruxelles.
“Within the limitations of their understanding and ability, the girls have carried out and documented a very elegant piece of work. The wealth of detail and precision is exemplary, the choice of the right cress is very intelligent, and I could go on,” said Johanson.
Johanson also wasted no time in issuing an invitation:
“I really hope they spend their future working lives in research because I definitely think they have a natural aptitude for it. Personally, I would love to have them in my team!”
No more bedside mobiles
The five girls from North Jutland have not yet made any decisions about their future careers. They are still taken aback by all the sudden attention.
“This has given me a constant buzz. I still can’t quite take it all in,” said Nielsen.
There has also been another rather more down-to-earth consequence of the cress seed experiment.
“None of us sleep with our mobile phones at our bedside any more. Either we keep them at a distance or in another room. And we always turn off the computer,” she said.

Não sou eu que irei julgar as pessoas e as atitudes, será o tempo e a memória do nosso povo.
É certo e sabido, que neste processo temporal, a história suavizará episódios, como o uso de um toque de telemóvel da música Grândola Vila Morena (como nota de curiosidade o episódio ocorreu um ano antes das famosas grandoladas) pelo à data vereador Francisco Louro em plena reunião de câmara, contra a opinião do vereador Paulo Matos (ver no link http://p-m.blogs.sapo.pt/71441.html ).
Também é verdade que não foi uma nem duas as vezes que o vereador Francisco Louro em defesa do partido socialista, apoiando Jorge Martins, disse que colocaria o vereador Paulo Matos em tribunal pelas suas afirmações.
Mas o tempo passou.
O vereador obreiro do Partido Socialista foi afastado de novos cargos de poder, sendo que as eleições de 2013 confirmaram o saneamento politico interno.
Mas com toda a dose de justiça é importante dizer, que foi com este Comandante de Bombeiros, foi com este ex-vereador, que mais e melhor equipamento os Soldados da Paz obtiveram.
Hoje, é importante fazer uma homenagem, aqui, pública, por alguém idóneo para o fazer pelo já referido no início deste texto, a este ex-vereador, que lutou para que os Bombeiros Municipais de Gavião sejam hoje um exemplo de modernidade e eficácia.
Talvez só hoje, o ex-vereador Francisco Louro tenha terminado o seu mandato ao contrário dos seus pares do executivo anterior, com a recepção de uma viatura no valor comercial de 370.000€ e outra de 150.000€, que foi ele que efectivamente trouxe para Gavião.
Carissimo Comandante dos Bombeiros Municipais de Gavião - Francisco Louro, se há pessoa que tem de ser homenageada pela dedicação ao soldados da paz é o senhor, e não outrem.

Orçamento Municipal de Gavião - Liquidação do projeto de Habitação Social!

Caros amigos,
Hoje, com a aprovação do Orçamento Municipal para o período de 2013 a 2017, uma das potenciais heranças do Socialista Jorge Martins foi liquidada - o projeto da Habitação Social!
Jorge Martins, ex-presidente do município, foi um defensor de um projeto de Habitação Social no concelho de Gavião desde pelo menos 2005. Aliás, esta foi uma das suas maiores promessas/bandeiras eleitorais, como se comprova com a reportagem no suplemento do Gavião com Voz(s) de 2009.
José Pio, o atual presidente apesar, de ser do mesmo Partido Socialista, apesar de ter recebido a câmara de Gavião com uma boa folga nas contas (mais de um milhão e meio de euros - 1.500.000€), ignorou as promessas do seu antecessor dizendo que não avança por culpa do Governo.
A verdade é que não avança porque não quer, pois sempre o maior ónus esteve do lado da câmara (942.000€) e todos nós sabemos que neste momento em Portugal o Governo é condicionado pela Troika, que nos veio resgatar da falência, a que o governo de José Sócrates (socialista) nos conduziu.
